Coffee Cup Reading App: Read Your Cup From Your Phone

A coffee cup reading app does one thing a book cannot: it looks at your grounds. You photograph the inside of your cup, and within seconds you get the symbols, where they sit, and what they mean together. Here is how these apps work, what to look for, and how to install ours on your phone in under a minute.

What a coffee cup reading app actually does

Traditional tasseography has three steps: identify the shapes, locate them in the cup, and combine them into one story. A good app follows the same order. It detects contours in the grounds, maps them to the classic symbol dictionary (bird, fish, snake, ring, heart, road…), checks the zone - rim for weeks, middle for months, base for the long term - and then writes the reading as a single narrative instead of a list of definitions.

What separates a good app from a random generator

• It reads your photo. If the result would be the same with any image, it is a horoscope generator, not a reading.
• It names positions. "A bird near the rim on the handle side" is a reading; "you will receive news" is a fortune cookie.
• It respects the tradition. Turkish kahve falı, Greek kafemanteia, Arabic qaraat al-finjan and Balkan gledanje u šolju share a symbol vocabulary - a serious app uses it.
• It lets you ask follow-up questions. Half the value of a human reader is the conversation afterwards.
• It keeps your photos private. Your cup is personal; readings should not be public by default.

How to photograph your cup so the app can read it

1. Brew real Turkish or Greek coffee - unfiltered, fine grounds.
2. Drink slowly, leaving a small amount of sludge at the bottom.
3. Swirl three times, then flip the cup onto the saucer.
4. Wait five to ten minutes, until the porcelain is cool.
5. Lift the cup and shoot straight down into it, in daylight, no flash.
6. Add a second and third photo from the sides for the full walls.
