How to Read Turkish Coffee Grounds: A Beginner's Guide to Tasseography

Turkish coffee cup reading - known as tasseography, fal, or kahve falı - is one of the oldest divination traditions in the Mediterranean. The shapes left by your coffee grounds are said to whisper your past, your present, and the path ahead. Here's how to do it from scratch, the way grandmothers in Istanbul still do.

1. Brew a proper Turkish coffee

Use finely-ground Turkish coffee, cold water, and a small cezve (long-handled pot). One heaping teaspoon per cup, sugar to taste. Heat slowly until it foams - never boil it. Pour gently so the foam crowns the cup. The thick layer of grounds at the bottom is what we'll read.

2. Drink with intention

Sip slowly. As you drink, hold a question in your mind - about love, money, a decision, or just the week ahead. Stop when only the muddy sediment remains. Don't stir; the symbols form best when undisturbed.

3. Flip the cup

1. Place the saucer on top of your cup.
2. Make a wish, then flip the whole thing upside-down in one swift motion.
3. Wait 5–10 minutes for the cup to cool and the grounds to settle.

4. Lift and read

Lift the cup straight up. Look inside: the rim represents the near future, the middle your present situation, and the bottom your past or deeper truths. Symbols near the handle are about you; the opposite side is about people around you.

5. Decode the symbols

Don't look for clean drawings - look for impressions. A heart shape, a bird, a road, a tower. Trust your first reading. Common meanings include:

• Heart - love, a confession, emotional opening.
• Bird - news, travel, a message arriving soon.
• Snake - caution, jealousy, hidden enemy.
• Anchor - stability, a relationship that holds.
• Ring - commitment, marriage, closure of a cycle.
