Few things in a coffee cup feel as personal as a letter. When the grounds form an A, an M or an S, readers in every tradition agree on one thing: the letter points to a person - usually the initial of someone who is about to matter in your life.
The short answer
A letter in your coffee cup is almost always the initial of a name: a lover, a friend, a rival, or a place. Its position tells you when that person arrives, and the symbols around it tell you why.
Letter near the rim: someone arrives soon
The rim is the next few days or weeks. A clear letter here means a person with that initial will contact you, appear unexpectedly, or become important very soon. Close to the handle, the person is already in your circle.
Letter in the middle: someone shaping the present
In the middle of the cup the letter belongs to someone influencing your life right now - a partner, a boss, a family member. Look at its neighbors to understand their role.
Letter at the bottom: a name from the past
At the base, the letter usually belongs to someone from your past who still occupies your thoughts, or whose decision years ago still affects you.
What the letter pairs with
- Letter + heart: a romantic interest with that initial.
- Letter + ring: commitment or engagement with that person.
- Letter + bird: news or a message from them.
- Letter + snake: be careful - this person may not be honest.
- Letter + road: a journey linked to them, or a city starting with that letter.
- Two letters together: a couple, or a full set of initials.
Numbers in the cup
Numbers usually mean time: 3 can be three days, three weeks or three months depending on the zone. Near the rim count days, in the middle weeks, at the bottom months.
Why letters are hard to read alone
Grounds are messy. An M can look like a W from the other side, a C can be the start of an O. That is why experienced readers always turn the cup and read from the handle. A letter only becomes meaningful once you know its orientation, its zone, and the story of the whole cup.
