What is kafemanteia?
Kafemanteia is the Greek tradition of reading fortune from the grounds left in a cup of ellinikos kafes - the thick, finely ground coffee brewed in a briki on a low flame. The ritual lives in family kitchens across Greece, Cyprus, and the worldwide Greek diaspora.
The three-wishes ritual
- While drinking, hold three silent wishes in mind.
- Cover the cup with the saucer and flip in one motion.
- Wait until the cup is cool to the touch.
- The reader looks for which of the three wishes is confirmed by the symbols.
Classic Greek cup symbols
- Καρδιά (heart) - love returned, often near the rim.
- Σταυρός (cross) - protection, or a heavier obligation.
- Καράβι (boat) - travel, often by sea, news from abroad.
- Δαχτυλίδι (ring) - marriage or a sealed agreement.
- Πουλί (bird) - good news, a letter, a message.
- Ψάρι (fish) - prosperity, an unexpected gain.
