The tea leaf reading ritual

  1. Brew loose-leaf tea (no bag) and drink slowly, leaving a sip and the leaves.
  2. Swirl the cup three times anti-clockwise.
  3. Invert the cup onto the saucer and wait one minute.
  4. Turn the cup right-side up with the handle pointing at you.
  5. Read from the rim downward, clockwise, noting every clear shape.

Tea leaves vs Turkish coffee grounds

Tea leaves form lighter, more feathered shapes; Turkish coffee grounds form denser, sharper symbols. The vocabulary of meanings overlaps almost entirely - a heart is a heart, a snake is a snake. If you have a Turkish coffee cup instead, see our coffee symbols dictionary.
