What does tasseography mean?
Tasseography - from the French tasse (cup) and the Greek -graphy (writing) - is divination by cup. A reader looks at the residue left after a drink is finished and reads the shapes as symbols. You will also see it called tasseomancy, tassology, coffee ground reading, or simply cup reading.
Three fluids are traditionally used: thick unfiltered coffee, loose tea leaves, and wine sediment. Coffee is the most common today because Turkish-style grounds settle into unusually crisp shapes.
A short history
Cup reading spread out of the Ottoman world in the 16th and 17th centuries alongside coffee itself. Turkish kahve falı, Levantine finjan reading, Greek kafemandeia and Romanian cup reading are all branches of the same practice. When loose-leaf tea reached Britain and Ireland, the same technique was applied to tea leaves, and Victorian parlour books turned the symbol lists into the dictionaries still in use today.
How a tasseography reading works
- Brew thick, unfiltered coffee and drink it slowly, holding one clear question.
- Leave a little sludge, cover the cup with the saucer and flip it in one motion.
- Wait five to ten minutes for the grounds to run down and set.
- Lift the cup and turn it slowly in daylight, letting shapes emerge.
- Read each shape by what it is and where it sits in the cup.

Tasseography with tea leaves
